WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal Co-authors Chapter in 'Convergence of Food Security, Energy Security and Sustainable Agriculture'
Sharon B. Megdal, Director of the UA Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), recently co-authored a chapter in Convergence of Food Security, Energy Security and Sustainable Agriculture, a book examining the interrelated fields of food security, energy security and sustainable agriculture as the key to a stable global agricultural platform. The book addresses various topics relating to food/energy security and sustainable agriculture, including policy considerations, soil and water as key components in food production, genetically modified traits and omega-3 fatty acids, agronomic implications relative to food security, international sustainable agriculture and food security, and the use of chemicals in sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Megdal's co-authored chapter, "Impact of Technology and Policy on Sustainable Agricultural Water Use and Food Security", discusses concerns over rapidly growing demands for food and energy worldwide and agriculture's entry into an era of water scarcity. The chapter looks at ways to overcome environmental, soil, and water management challenges to assure the sustainability of agricultural irrigation over the long term. Her co-authors include Mahbub Alam, Professor Emeritus, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Kansas State University, Greg Kruger, West Central Research and Extension Center, University of Nebraska and David Songstad, Research/Cell Biology, Cibus LLC.
