At the end of February, WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal and Associate Director Jamie McEvoy traveled to Washington DC to attend the annual meeting of the National Institutes of Water Resources (NIWR). The meeting provided an opportunity for an update from the US Geological Survey (USGS) on the 104(b) and 104(g) grant programs, including the good news that funding for the 104(b) small research grants is expected to increase in the coming year. There were several presentations on water and energy use for data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, a topic of interest to many institutes. Participants had the chance to network and learn what other institutes are working on, including how they engage with students. Following the NIWR annual meeting was a day of Capitol Hill visits. Megdal and McEvoy visited with legislative staff in several offices to highlight the importance of WRRC’s ongoing work through its federally funded programs, such as the Water Resources Research Act Program and the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program.
