On September 28, WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal and Associate in Extension Elia Tapia presented on shared aquifers in the Arizona–Sonora border region as part of the University of Arizona Department of Environmental Science Fall 2026 Colloquium Series. Their presentation introduced the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program (TAAP), a binational US–Mexico effort that advances scientific understanding and information exchange about shared aquifers, describing the program’s framework, selected aquifers, and recent activities.

Megdal and Tapia focused on the Transboundary Santa Cruz Aquifer, showcasing the recently published Binational Study of the Transboundary Santa Cruz Aquifer. They emphasized the value of information sharing and binational collaboration, with continued monitoring and scientific assessment, to building an understanding of the dynamic connections among groundwater and surface water, recharge, climate variability, and water use in shared groundwater resources.
