In our state, where every drop of water counts, researchers at the U of A are driving innovation and understanding to secure Arizona’s water future. Given substantial uncertainty in Arizona’s changing water conditions, U of A researchers are helping communities build more resilience. By combining innovation, collaboration, and long-term vision, scientists—and the funding sources that make their work possible—ensure that the state is better prepared for the water challenges ahead.

The month of September is shaping up to be a busy one for WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal, who is delivering talks to a wide range of audiences around Arizona. She notes that “There is much interest in water locally, statewide, and nationally, especially about what is going on in the Colorado River Basin.” These talks vary widely in scope, focus, and level of detail, but the participants are all actively seeking to learn more about water.

As the fall semester kicks off, many of you are feeling the excitement that comes with new opportunities and fresh starts. After a long, hot, and mostly dry summer, we hope you're returning to campus feeling rested, recharged, and ready to take on the year ahead. To all new and returning students, the WRRC wishes you a successful 2025–2026 academic year!

Water demand in Gila County is driven primarily by mining, which accounts for nearly half (49%) of total use. Agriculture—irrigation and livestock—accounts for 29% of demand, while municipal demand, including domestic and commercial use, represents the remaining 22%. Groundwater is the source of most (94%) of the county’s water supply.

The WRRC Annual Photo Contest is underway, and the theme for 2025 is “A World of Water.” We’re inviting photo submissions that explore how water shapes our world—and how people interact with water. On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, four WRRC staff members attended the Arizona Association of Women in Water and Agriculture (AAWWA) Colorado River Update, which was held at the U of A Cooperative Extension office in Maricopa County. Hosted and presented by women in the water industry, this conference showcased the most recent information available on the status of the Colorado River.

Arizona Project WET (APW) was thrilled to be invited by the Children’s Museum Oro Valley (CMOV) to join the fun at “Chillin’ at the Chul” earlier this month! APW is grateful to CMOV for welcoming us into their space and giving us the opportunity to connect kids with the wonders of Arizona’s desert watersheds through hands-on exploration and playful discovery.

Earlier this summer, the Arizona Hydrological Society (AHS) announced a new Arizona-Mexico Transboundary Scholarship, which is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at any Arizona university or college. Another opportunity that may be of interest to some is Family Farm Alliance’s recently launched Patrick O’Toole Young Conservationist Scholarship, which provides financial support for young farmers and ranchers who want to attend its annual conference.

Congratulations to Pima County Cooperative Extension Director Claire Zucker on her upcoming retirement from the University of Arizona. While it is hard for us to say farewell to Claire, a longtime friend and collaborator, we wish her all the best in this new chapter, wherever it may lead.

The US Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) has just published its August 2025 24-Month Study, outlining expected hydrologic conditions and reservoir operations for Lake Powell and Lake Mead through water year 2026 (from Oct 1, 2025, through Sep 30, 2026). The study highlights the ongoing effects of historic drought across the Colorado River Basin and underscores the importance of developing stronger, long-term management strategies.
