Presentation: Drought and Sustainable Water Management in California: Behind the Scenes

Speaker: Lester Snow, Executive Director, California Water Foundation

Date/Time: Monday, October 19 / 3:00 PM

Location: Haury Lecture Hall (S107), ENR2 Building (1064 E. Lowell St.)

On Monday, October 19, Lester Snow will speak at the University of Arizona about drought in California: how it is not the worst of the state's woes, but rather has exposed fundamental weaknesses in how the state manages its water. According to Snow, without major and permanent changes now, no amount of rain this winter will fix the situation in the long term.

Snow will also provide a behind-the-scenes view of what it took to get new groundwater legislation passed in California, along with his perspective on why it is important, challenges for its implementation, and how it connects to California’s broader commitments to adaptation and mitigation. The lecture will be held at the Haury Lecture Hall (room S107) of the new ENR2 Building, at 3:00 pm.

Snow was a primary figure behind California’s new Sustainable Groundwater Management Act and is Executive Director of the California Water Foundation. He has also served as the state's Secretary for Natural Resources, Director of its Department of Water Resources, and as Regional Director for Reclamation. He is a proud alumnus of UA Department of Hydrology and Water Resources.

Snow’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions (CCASS), the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), and the UA Dept. of Soil, Water and Environmental Science (SWES).
