WRRC Welcomes Two New Team Members
The WRRC welcomes two new members to its team:Anna Msigwa and Luna Falk. Dr. Msigwa, anaccomplished visiting scholar, joins us fromTanzania through the PEER2PEER fellowshipprogram and will be spending the next monthworking on a transboundary water security project.Luna Falk is a master’s student in Water, Society,and Policy at the U of A, and has studiedenvironmental law and policy in the US andinternational diplomacy at the University of Oxfordin the UK. Her research focuses on cross borderwater issues and governance.
U of A Professor Condon Joins GroundwaterFlow Mapping Effort
As part of a three-year study on groundwater fromcoast to coast, University of Arizona Hydrology andAtmospheric Sciences Associate Professor LauraCondon and researchers from Princeton Universitycreated a simulation of groundwater paths. Theirstudy area spanned the continental US and parts ofCanada and Mexico. Published in Nature Water, thestudy reveals that rain and snowmelt flow muchfarther underground than previously believed.
Lack of Water Exacerbates LA Fires, AmongOther Factors
According to various news stories, the catastrophicfires currently raging through the greater LosAngeles region have led to 20% of fire hydrantsrunning dry, resulting in firefighters discontinuingtheir use. The extraordinarily high water demandsneeded to fight the fires plaguing the LA area havedrained storage facilities and lowered waterpressure in the regional patchwork of hydrantsystems.
