The WRRC welcomed special guests visiting from South Africa on Friday, June 15. Shafick Adams, Executive Manager in charge of Water Resource Management and Ecosystems for the Water Research Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, was joined by colleagues from the Water Research Commission. These included Dr. Stanley Liphadzi, Group Executive R&D, Dr. Valerie Naidoo, Executive Manager, Business Development and Innovations, and Dr. Manjusha Sunil, Program Manager, Water Technologies. Mr. Adams gave a seminar on South Africa's strategies for improving its water security in the face of increasing frequency of drought, like the situation in Cape Town during the past year. Adams discussed various ways in which South Africa is increasing the resilience of its water supplies, including changing uses and user behaviors, exploring new sources of water (including the use of managed aquifer recharge in areas near Cape Town, desalination, and rainwater harvesting), and improving infrastructure.
