Arguably, fresh water is becoming our most valuable commodity. Where once we could expect to turn on the tap and receive a never-ending supply of fresh, clean, safe water —climate and contamination are threatening to upend this reliability. For this reason and due to his innate curiosity, Professor Brian Berkowitz of Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel has a research focus that centers around experimental analysis and computer modeling of fluid and chemical transport through geological formations, with an emphasis on groundwater systems. He and his team have developed models and methods for environmentally-friendly treatment of contaminated water and industrial contaminants. The models show how groundwater contamination can occur and that it often happens at a faster rate than was previously thought.

Professor Berkowitz, who was born in Canada, received his BSc and MSc degrees in Applied Mathematics in 1980 and 1982, respectively, from the University of Alberta. He completed his DSc at the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology. From 1986 to 1991, he worked as a research hydrologist for Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture. He served as a visiting professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of British Columbia before joining the staff of the Weizmann Institute in 1993.
