Douglas-Agua Prieta "Growing Water Smart" Workshop, June 12, 2025

Sonoran Institute

On June 12, 2025, the Sonoran Institute and Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy held a Douglas-Agua Prieta “Growing Water Smart” workshop in Douglas, AZ, where participants from both sides of the border learned about regional efforts towards better management of their shared aquifer. WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal introduced Universidad de Sonora Professor Elia Tapia, who presented the latest research carried out within the WRRC’s Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program (TAAP). Tapia’s presentation about transboundary aquifer prioritization and management, based on recently published research by the TAAP team, highlighted the prioritization results of the shared Douglas-Agua Prieta aquifer. Anne Gondor, the WRRC’s Associate in Extension for the Water RAPIDS program, joined Megdal and Carol Holden, Cochise Extension Director & Associate Agent of Economic Development, in representing U of A Cooperative Extension at the workshop. The gathering concluded with working groups identifying action steps to take regarding effluent use and reuse, recharge, and green stormwater infrastructure to reduce monsoon flooding.
