During the 1st Earth Sciences Symposium, held November 12–14, 2025, and organized by the Department of Geology at Universidad de Sonora in Hermosillo, Mexico, WRRC Associate in Extension Elia Tapia joined students, faculty, and invited experts to explore shared challenges in water resources. Her presentation, “Water, Risk, and Resilience: Shared Challenges in Ambos Nogales,” focused on the sister cities of Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, highlighting how climate variability, population growth, and infrastructure limitations affect water security on both sides of the border.

The symposium fostered dialogue and cultural exchange, reinforcing the importance of partnerships between academic institutions and local stakeholders to build a more resilient future for the Ambos Nogales transboundary region. The WRRC and Universidad de Sonora have long been partners in studying the Arizona-Sonora border aquifers through the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program (TAAP) and, along with other TAAP collaborators, have produced relevant research on the Santa Cruz Aquifer, which sustains Ambos Nogales.
