On January 26, 2026, WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal presented a lecture titled, “What Do I Need to Know About Water, and Why?” for the Osher Lifelong Learner Institute at the University of Arizona (OLLI-UA). In the lecture, Megdal addressed some of the water questions on the minds of many Arizonians, such as how the presence of data centers, semiconductor manufacturing plants, and other large water users will affect Arizona’s water supply. She explained the many factors contributing to water management decisions, including resource availability, institutional framework, socio-cultural values, and more. She also discussed the complexities of persistent challenges known as “wicked water problems” and highlighted strategies currently being used to solve water issues. In the realms of both technology and policy, she emphasized that “the need for innovation has never been greater.” The lecture was followed by a Q & A session filled with insightful questions from community members about local and regional water usage. With the motto “learning never retires,” OLLI-UA has been providing learning opportunities like this for adults aged 50+ for over 35 years.
