Classes for the Spring 2025 semester began this week, and as the U of A welcomes students back to campus, the WRRC looks forward to a season packed with webinars and other events you won’t want to miss.

On Thursday, January 30, we will deliver our first 2025 WRRC Water Webinar, Women and Water – Networking and Leading Across the Globe, featuring female experts who will share their water knowledge and perspectives from each of the organizations they represent. On Wednesday, February 5, the U of A Department of Hydrology & Atmospheric Sciences and the WRRC are co-sponsoring National Groundwater Association’s 2025 Darcy Lecture, featuring Grant Ferguson, a professor of hydrogeology in the Department of Civil, Geological and Environmental Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. Ferguson will present on Living Fossils: Ancient Groundwaters in the Anthropocene. Then on Friday, February 7, Pima-Maricopa Irrigation Project Director David DeJong will give a hybrid presentation about his latest book, Damming the Gila, the third in a five-volume series on the Gila River Indian Community’s water history. Reserve your spot soon if you would like to attend in person! Copies of DeJong’s book will be available for purchase before and after the event. The following Thursday, February 13, we invite you to bring your sweet tooth to the WRRC’s 21st Annual Chocolate Fest as we plan to indulge in delicious chocolaty treats and will announce the 2024 photo contest winners. To top off the fun, AZPM Reporter/Producer Zac Ziegler will be our special guest speaker in a “tables-turned” interview conducted by WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal.

Looking ahead to March, we hope you will add another WRRC Water Webinar book talk to your calendars. On Tuesday, March 4, Peter Gleick, Co-Founder/Senior Fellow of Pacific Institute, will discuss his book The Three Ages of Water: Prehistoric Past, Imperiled Present, and a Hope for the Future. Last but not least, the WRRC 2025 Annual Conference, Shared Borders, Shared Waters: Working Together in Times of Scarcity, will be held May 20–21. Stay tuned for updates regarding the conference agenda and registration for our signature annual event!
