University ranking organizations place the U of A high on scales of research quality and educational performance.

In the 2027 ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), the U of A ranked highly in several academic subjects, including water resources, which ranked #6 among public and US universities and #17 globally. Other high achieving departments include library and information science and Earth sciences. GRAS evaluates research universities worldwide across 57 subjects in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. The placements are made according to nine objective indicators grouped into five categories: world-class faculty, world-class research output, high-quality research, research impact, and international collaboration.

In Times Higher Education rankings, the U of A placed #1 in the Southwest and among the nation's top 25 public universities for the third year in a row. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings create global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. Using 17 performance indicators, this ranking system offers comprehensive and balanced comparisons for use by students, academics, university leaders, industry, and governments.
