On October 8, Elia Tapia, Associate in Extension at the WRRC, joined representatives from Santa Cruz County, the City of Nogales, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and Arizona State University (ASU) at the Santa Cruz County Complex to review findings from three initiatives addressing water management and flooding challenges in Ambos Nogales. Presentations featured the Nogales Sonora Flood Risk Atlas presented by Nogales’ Municipal Institute for Research and Planning (IMIP), ASU’s Ambos Nogales Green Infrastructure Strategy, and WRRC’s perspectives on water-related challenges in Nogales, Sonora, highlighting strategies such as green infrastructure to reduce climate impacts and build resilience.

These efforts stress the importance of binational collaboration and integrated strategies to strengthen resilience in the Ambos Nogales region. They also call for action to assess the Nogales Wash as an interconnected system, recognizing that decisions and interventions on one side of the border can impact the other, for better or worse.
