This month, the WRRC welcomes back Research Associate Anna Msigwa, who was previously hosted by the WRRC in January–February 2025 through the PEER2PEER fellowship program on a transboundary water security project. Now she rejoins the WRRC to conduct postdoctoral research supported by the Schlumberger Foundation’s Faculty for the Future Program. Her current research focuses on developing a framework for transboundary water governance in the Lake Tanganyika Basin, integrating land-use mapping, climate analysis, and policy review to support cooperative water management and evidence-based decision-making.

Anna led a project on the development of a mobile-based drought early warning application, funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the OWSD–UNESCO Early Career Fellowship. This work integrated remote sensing, climate data, and machine learning to support climate risk management and decision-making for farmers and water managers in East Africa.

In Tanzania, Anna serves as a lecturer and researcher in hydrology and water resources engineering at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). She is a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) and a laureate of the One Planet Fellowship from African Women in Agricultural Research and Development. She is also a participant in the US–Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium. She has received several fellowships and recognitions, including the OWSD–UNESCO Early Career Fellowship, PEER2PEER Fellowship (US National Academies), the Future African Research Leaders Fellowship, travel grants from AWARD and the Carnegie Corporation, and multiple awards for academic excellence and research impact.

Welcome back, Anna!
