Conference to Close with Tribal Perspectives and Key Takeaways
At the conclusion of the WRRC 2026 annual conference, two presentations will offer important perspectives on the current and future challenges and opportunities of industrial water use. A Tribal keynote and a conference wrap-up will help conference participants reflect on the broader implications of the discussions and carry key insights forward.
Just before the conference’s final networking break, attendees will hear a Tribal keynote from John Lewis, managing director of Native American Energy at Avant Energy Inc., on Pressure Points for Tribal Country. Lewis will examine the role of commercial and industrial development on Tribal lands, with a particular focus on energy infrastructure and its relationship to economic opportunity, self-determination, and resilience. Lewis is expected to highlight the importance of Tribal nations in building their own technical, legal, and planning capacity so they can negotiate from a position of strength, protect their interests, and shape development on their own terms in an increasingly uncertain water and energy future.
The conference will conclude with closing remarks from David Wegner, senior strategic consultant at Woolpert Engineering, board member of the National Academy of Sciences, and board member emeritus of the Water Science and Technology Board. Wegner’s wrap-up will synthesize key lessons from the preceding sessions and talks and reflect on what participants have learned about the growing intersections among water, technology, mining, and energy in Arizona. His closing comments will revisit major themes that emerged throughout the program, including rising resource demands, the importance of cross-sector collaboration, and the need for proactive planning as Arizona’s economy evolves. By drawing together the major points expressed during the conference, Wegner’s remarks will bring participants a clearer understanding of the tradeoffs ahead and of the innovative, collaborative approaches needed to steward Arizona’s water future responsibly.
