The Western States Water Council, Western Governors’ Association, and Arizona Department of Water Resources, are hosting a symposium focused on strategies to meet western water resource infrastructure needs. Many western states are faced with overwhelming cost projections to meet their present and future water infrastructure needs due to deterioration of aging existing infrastructure and stress from increasing demands related to growth and uncertainties, including increasingly extreme droughts and flooding.
This symposium is intended to bring together state and federal agencies, local officials, stakeholders and various experts to: (1) explore western state infrastructure financing authorities, policies, programs and projects; (2) evaluate public and private financing and cost sharing resources; and (3) identify common interests and promote partnerships and coalitions to support infrastructure spending.
It will build on earlier efforts, reviewing and refining recommendations for the governors and others to pursue related to: (1) recognizing the value of water and promoting the conservation, preservation and appropriate development of water in order to avoid and/or minimize “water stresses” that could put the West at a competitive disadvantage; (2) integrating water and land use considerations in future planning, including the importance of water-related infrastructure as a critical factor in jobs creation and a healthy economy, as well as preserving our quality of life and environment; and (3) promoting both investment and innovation to build a stable, reliable and sustainable foundation to meet the needs of present and future generations.
