Professor for soil and water physics, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Professor Uri Shani will address how active agreements between neighboring jurisdictions can lead to water solutions rather than conflicts. Like the Southwestern United States, Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority are experiencing increased water demands due to population growth and decreased supplies due to several factors, including changing climate. Professor Shani will emphasize that regional solutions should optimize across all available water resources in the region and promote efficient use of existing water sources.
As General Manager and Chairman of the Israeli Governmental Water and Sewage Authority (2006-2011), Prof. Uri Shani led the transformation of Israel from a country that depended on ever-increasing shortage of natural water supply to water independency through ambitious water saving and increasing efficiency, including sewage recycling and desalination. He has led three international water agreements, including the Jordan-Palestinian Authority-Israel Tri-national Agreement on Red Sea – Dead Sea First Phase and Regional Desalination (December 2013).
Prof. Shani received his Ph.D. in Soil Physics from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he serves as Professor for soil and water physics. Prof. Shani has published 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and holds 8 patents. He is founder, major shareholder and chairman of NDrip, which has developed a novel irrigation technology that combines flood irrigation infrastructure and costs with drip irrigation advantages. He received the 2016 Priyadarshni Academy of Mumbai India, Global Award for outstanding contribution in scientific research and development of innovative water technologies and management.
