More than 300 people attended the WRRC's 2013 Annual Conference, "Water Security: From the Gound Up" on March 5. “Arizona Week” host Michael Chihak covered the conference and spoke with WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal and speakers Elma Montana, Carly Jerla and Jim Leenhouts.

The University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center is offering a summer internship to a student interested in gaining experience writing about environmental and water issues. The internship is supported by Montgomery & Associates, an Arizona-based consulting firm specializing in hydrology and water resource issues. The selected intern will contribute to research and writing for an issue of Arroyo, the annual WRRC publication that focuses on a critical Arizona water issue.

Jean McLain, Associate Director of the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), is leading an investigation into the biological and chemical quality of harvested rainwater in Arizona. Along with Leif Abrell (Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science) and Nathan Allen (Biosphere 2 Center), McLain is assessing if inline filtration devices increase the quality of the harvested rainwater and decrease health risks.

The recent presenter for the Water Sustainability 2013 Distinguished Speaker Series, Justice Gregory J. Hobbs Jr., Colorado Supreme Court, shared his insight about western water law and his unique talents for poetry and photography. His talk, which can be viewed here, focused on the landscape, people, and water of the Four Corner states. Throughout his presentation he shared some of his own poetry on these subjects and many photographs.

The Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) is happy to announce that all four regional bulletins on environmental flows and water demands are now available. The series of bulletins cover the entire state in four regions: Central, Southeastern, North/Northeastern Arizona, and the Colorado River. These bulletins provide a concise introduction to the current knowledge about environmental water demands in each region, outline gaps in that understanding, and illustrate how environmental demands can be considered

The WRRC's Spring 2012 Newsletter, Arizona Water Resource, is now available on line. The issue includes features on the current fire threat and common environmental interests of researchers across the Arizona-Mexico border, a review of legislative actions on water, new publications, the Public Policy Review, and much more. There is also an insert from the UA Water Sustainability Program describing highlights of the year.

On June 1, 2012, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) sponsored Expert Workshop on Water Security: Managing Risks and Tradeoffs in Selected River Basins was held In Paris, France. With increased urbanization and demand for food and energy, securing sufficient and safe water for humans and nature seems more crucial than ever. The workshop focused on risk tradeoffs of water shortage, excess and pollution, and maintenance of acceptable level of risks to people, environment and economies. Dr.

Sharon Megdal was a recipient of a UA at the Leading Edge award announced at UA Innovation Day, March 6. She was one of five UA faculty to be recognized for performing cutting-edge research and translating that research into real-world application. Her work on assessing environmental water needs and developing mechanisms for incorporating the demands of all sectors into water planning lead to an innovative mechanism called Conserve to Enhance (C2E). A C2E pilot has been launched in Tucson with the support of many funders and partners.
